The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the tally a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to guarantee the London club went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to check the score on the screen and the official ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's side into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain 14th and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils duties at each end of pitch

Following a uninspiring weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, Frank opted for the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defensive duties, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the exits after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of established strikers - had scored just one league goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: The team head to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: The London club travel to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round League Cup tie against the Magpies.
