Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors will gain the ability to question specific calls from the official, echoing the protocol already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
